A study has found the most congested road in Swindon is also the slowest to drive on.

The study divides roads into major and local A-roads, and found that the most congested road of all of them is the A4289.

This road is divided into two parts: one part being Kingshill Road and Bath Road to reach Swindon's Old Town.

The other part runs from the Magic Roundabout along the County Road.

Kingshill Road was reported by the Adver to be Swindon’s most polluted road.

Swindon Borough Council declared the road an Air Quality Management Area in 2018 because the levels of pollution were dangerously above government regulations.

The road had digital signs installed on it in January in a bid to improve air quality there. The signs advise people to consider cycling to reduce pollution in the area.

At the time, a ban on lorries using the very steep road was being considered.

The road, which is very steep, means that lorries must work less efficiently to drive on the road.

Automatic number plate recognition is in use in Kingshill already and could be used to see if vehicles are breaching the ban after it is brought in.

A Swindon Borough Council report said: “Short-term exposure over hours or days to elevated levels of air pollution can also cause a range of health impacts, including effects on lung function, exacerbation of asthma and increases in respiratory and cardiovascular hospital admissions and mortality.

“There is also emerging evidence of associations between air pollution and low birth weight, diabetes, cognitive decline and dementia."

The new study put together by Cromwell Trucks and Online Marketing Surgery shows it takes 75.1 seconds per mile to travel along the A4289.

Closely behind this is the A4313, or Ocotal Way, and in third was the A4311, or Cricklade Road.

Meanwhile for major roads, the A419 northbound exit for A4259 was nearly twice as slow as second place, the A419 southbound stretch between A4259 and M4.

The slow exit is the exit from the A419 towards Swinodn onto Marlborough Road.

This area has recently seen a huge spike in traffic owing to delays at the Great Western Hospital.

Traffic trying to get into the hospital car park has stretched onto Marlborough Road.

Delays to get into the hospital have, according to some members of the public, been as long as one hour.
